Aztec chocolate
Thank the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl for stealing the cocoa tree from heaven. There was an Aztec chocolate drink, cold, thick and sugarless (no sugar in Mexico back then). MMmm chocolatl (the Nahautl word for chocolate). But just before you start thinking that it sounds a little awful, the twist comes. The Aztec people added chilli to the cocoa drink creating a hot, cold chocolate. My husband is of Aztec descent and neither his family nor anyone they know drinks chili hot chocolate, but I'm so grateful for it and am an addict back in my home country of New Zealand. I will share my favorite recipes with you and please feel free to share yours.
